Can you talk a bit about the bullying storyline in the show and can you talk about your own experience with it growing up.
WELL,YES.
I absolutely have had firsthand experience. I was bullied a lot in junior high and high school. In fact, I was bullied so much in junior high, I had to be homeschooled for a little bit. It’s funny because — like, when I stated that I was bullied in high school, I didn’t realise it was like a confession, like a big thing. It turned into this huge thing. And I thought everybody was bullied in high school.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE GOING THROUGH IT?
My biggest advice, I think, would be to a kid, if they’re struggling, to get help for it. Like, I mean, I think the problem is teachers and faculty members at schools these days, they’re all about disciplining kids, they’re all about punishing them and shaking their finger at them, and they forget to remind the kids that they’re there to help them too. So I think it’s more responsibility for people who are witnessing it every day rather than someone who’s being bullied or are bullied.Because when you’re in this scenario, it’s hard to avoid and hard to escape it. You kind of need help.
SO, DID YOU GO BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER YOU WERE HOMESCHOOLED?
Yes, I did. Yes, I went to high school, yeah. And then things were okay? They’re okay, but, I mean, like — I mean, that’s kind of my mindset. Like, when you go to school, you get bullied. That’s what I always thought because that’s how it was for me.
Did you get some kind of emotional letters from — or contact from fans talking about the storyline?
Oh, yeah, yeah. Thousands and thousands, yeah, absolutely. If I open up my Twitter or my Facebook right now, I could print out, like, seven or eight for you right here. I think all kids need to see is someone like them. They just need someone going through the same thing they’re going through and they just feel so much better about themselves.
And you were named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
I was, yeah. That must be an incredible thing. Yes, absolutely. I mean, even though I have the magazine framed in my house, it’s still hard to believe that actually happened, yeah.
How conscious are you off being a role model? I mean, is that something that actually influences what you do or don’t do?
Absolutely, yeah. I mean, there are definitely situations that I definitely avoid because I know that I’m a role model and if I get seen, you know, doing this or doing that, it would take credibility away from me. It would also take credibility away from the character, unfortunately. So if I do anything stupid, it would reflect on Kurt as well. But, yeah, I definitely take it very seriously, and I hope that anyone who would be in my situation and would have this powerful material that that they’re portraying on a television show, I would hope they would take it as seriously.
You are also writing books for children. What are they going to be about?
Well, they’re completely different from anything I would do, because people kind of think Chris Colfer, oh, it must be books about bullying or something like that. But, no, I’m doing a middle grade reader fantasy series. And I just finished the first one in September, and it gets released August next year. I’m very, very impatient for it to be released and I can’t wait. It was one of the most fun I’ve ever had doing something.
What would you think is the biggest thing you’ve learned from being famous?
You can’t please everyone, so don’t try. It’s impossible to please everyone. There’s always going to be someone that wants to bring you down. I think Kurt is having the most sweet and most romantic relationship in the show. Is it going to be that sweet in the future? I hope not. I mean, it’s — I really — I love the relationship, but, oh, my God. It needs something. It needs some kind of drama or something, otherwise — I mean, you can only say I love you so many times. But they’ve been in such this, like, puppy-dog-love state for so long that when this new character Sebastian comes in and kind of stirs things up, I loved it. Kurt was horrified that someone was trying to steal his boyfriend, but, like, I was jumping
So are you more thick-skinned these days? Because as you were saying, you’ve learned not to try and please everyone.
Yeah, I mean, I think now I’m kind of like — I’m kind of like a grizzly bear. Like, I do still feel the sting of the bee, but it doesn’t hurt quite as much anymore. So how are you feeling about the Glee graduation? I’m looking forward to it. I think I was looking forward to my real graduation in high school more than this fake one. But, yeah, I’m excited to see what happens to him, where he goes.
Would you like to stay with “Glee,” or is there a bit of you that’s kind of itching to go and explore those other kind of opportunities coming your way?
Well, I put so much stuff on my plate where right now I’m getting to do both. I’m getting to branch out and do all the things that I’ve always wanted to do while staying on “Glee.” So I hope I can just have the best of both worlds, but, I mean, I’m fine with whatever happens.
What about celebrities on the show - who stands out in your mind as kind of the most exciting guest star or the most surprising guest star?
Well, I love Gwyneth. I was so intimidated by her at first because I didn’t know what to expect, because she’s kind of Hollywood royalty. And then she couldn’t have been nicer or any sweeter. We had a great, great time with her. And of course, I love Kristin Chenoweth and, oh, gosh, and John Stamos was so — was such a nice guy. We’ve really lucked out. We haven’t really had a guest star that we didn’t like. And Idina Menzel, she’s great, she’s fantastic.
You’ve done so many songs in "Glee." Is there still one song you would like do?
Yeah, there are a couple. I mean, I haven’t really gotten to do so much high soprano, operatic-type songs, like all of “Phantom of the Opera” or “Evita,” so I’d love to do something like that where I really get to sing really high, because I’ve got voice for it. I want to do it. But ever since I did I’m the Greatest Star and I got to do the whole scaffolding, acrobatic stuff and swords, it’s like I don’t want to just stand there and sing. I have to be doing something and singing otherwise I get bored.

He certainly can’t be accused of resting on his Glee success. “I saw the final cut of the movie that I filmed this summer, called Struck by Lighting, and I think it’s good,” he says.
“The fact that I can stand it, I think, is a good sign. And I have my first book coming out next summer. I’m really excited about that; we’re finalizing the cover art right now. And then I’m still developing that show for the Disney Channel. I just got off the phone with them last week.”
Of course, all that is on top of his regular gig on a hit network TV show. Colfer, who has a Golden Globe and two Emmy nominations for Glee, could easily be called the show’s breakout star, but that’s a title his isn’t totally comfortable with.
“Just that title is overwhelming. More like the star with a breakout,” he says with a laugh. “But no, I think I would be stupid if I didn’t try to jump on that success as much as a I have.”
His Glee character, Kurt Hummel, is almost as busy as Colfer, too, between running for class president, planning for life after graduation and dealing with all sorts of new issues in his relationship with boyfriend Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss).
“They’re still together, but there’s some big things coming up,” Colfer teases.
“A character named Sebastian (Grant Gustin) comes in and tries to steal Blaine away from Kurt, and Kurt was absolutely horrified. I loved it because it was finally something different with those characters. It was so much fun to do a scene with Darren where we’re yelling at each other.”
As groundbreaking as Colfer’s portrayal of openly gay Kurt has been, he’s thrilled that Kurt and Blaine are now being treated like any other couple.
“There was a point when you could say they’re in a relationship or together, but don’t show it! We just know they’re in the corner doing God knows what,” he says.
“But yeah, they should be treated like any other couple, so they should have fights like any other couple, right? Let’s get some more fights!”
Overworked as he may be, Colfer’s hectic schedule does at least keep him too busy to worry about his critics, though he is tempted to take them on, he admits.
“Oh sometimes, let me tell you,” he says.
“I have a stack of hate mail that I just want to respond to. Maybe one day when I’m tired or tipsy or something, I’m going to respond to them and tell them what I think.”

TVLINE | Over the summer you told me you were going to pitch [Glee co-creator] Ryan Murphy a Kurt/Blaine story that had never been told on TV before. Was this the story? No. I’m still pitching. [Laughs] My story might be a little too controversial.
TVLINE | Can you say yet what that story is? No, I don’t want to jinx it. But trust me, you’ll know. Your jaw will hit the floor.
TVLINE | What was your reaction when you read the sсript for this week’s episode, “The First Time?” Prior to getting the sсript Ryan approached Darren and I and told us that they were doing a virginity episode, and Darren and I just kind of looked at each other with wide eyes like, “Huh? What?’ And while we always have faith in the writers, we were a little skeptical. But then we got the sсript and shot it and everything was fine. What I thought could be raunchy and over-the-top was just very sweet and emotional. That’s kind of how it is with Glee. Ryan will come up and tell me they’re [tackling] this big, sensitive issue and I’ll freak out. But then I have no reason to freak out because it’s always handled really well.
TVLINE | This is arguably the most intimate you and Darren have been together — as characters and as actors. Was it awkward? Not really. We just kind of dove in. People always make a big deal about a kissing scene or a love scene, but it really isn’t. You have to realize it’s you, another actor and a room full of 40 crew members.
TVLINE | When fans heard that I had screened the episode in advance they wanted very specific details about the love scene. [Sigh] I know.
TVLINE | Specifically, they wanted to know if you were shirtless during it. I broke the bad news to them that you were wearing a shirt. [Laughs] I was totally [prepared] to have to do a shirtless scene. Or at least wear like a tank [top] or something. I even asked if I could wear a tank and they said no.
TVLINE | Did they say why? I think having two gay guys having sex on television was enough. They didn’t want to [reveal] a bunch of skin on top of it. I was like, “I want to wear a tank! Let me wear a tank!” [Ultimately], I wore a t-shirt.
TVLINE | My favorite scene in the episode was the one between Kurt and Karofsky [Max Adler] at the gay bar. That was absolutely my favorite scene as well.
TVLINE | What did you like about it? First, I was excited because I never actually shot a scene at a bar before. And there are just so many cool things you can do as an actor: you can grab your drink, you can play with a cherry, you can lean on the bar, you can lean on a stool. I loved that. And also it was great to see that character again and see what happened to [him]. The honesty behind [Karofsky] is kind of heartbreaking. That’s his life now. That grungy bar is the place where he found acceptance.
TVLINE | There’s a small segment of the Glee fan base pushing for a Kurt/Karofsky romance. And I have to say, after watching that scene, I kind of get it. I think it’s a great idea. I think people love Kurt and Blaine so much that they would never stray from that. But maybe if Blaine and Kurt take a break that would be a great alternative. I would like to see that happen.
TVLINE | Speaking of which, the episode also marked the introduction of the first real threat for Kurt and Blaine: Sebastian. Oh my God. I was so excited. When I found out that there was a character coming in to try and take Blaine away from Kurt my first thought was, “Why does nobody ever love Kurt? Why does nobody love me. Why does nobody ever pursue Kurt?” My second thought was that I was so excited that there was something coming up between Kurt and Blaine besides the puppy-dog love scenes they’ve been in since Season 2. I was so excited there was some kind of drama. I got to play Kurt in a territorial light, which I was excited about. I like Sebastian. I like his presence.
TVLINE | What kind of threat will he be moving forward? We’ll see. I think Sebastian is one of those very promiscuous, driven characters that once they have their eyes on something they don’t give up easily. Let me just say this won’t be the last time we’ll see Sebastian try and steal Blaine.

You will never be able to please everybody, especially not yourself
